As the economic artery of Green Bay, the port has a tremendous economic impact on the region. In 2007, this impact equated to more than $76 million, providing 615 local jobs which produced an estimated $23 million in income.
The quality-of-life impact on the community, however, extends well beyond dollars and cents. The port’s commitment to being a good neighbor ripples throughout the region and is seen in programs such as the Tall Ships Festival – a five-day event that drew up to 60,000 visitors to downtown Green Bay to view the 16 tall ships anchored there. This popular event along with other recreational opportunities on the waterfront help strike the balance between community leisure activities, and the commercial shipping industry that is so significant to our local economy.
Equally important is the positive environmental impact of the port. Water transportation uses far less fuel and produces far fewer emissions than other transportation options.
